Of the first batch of my ‘back catalogue’ short stories I revised and published when starting up Greyhart Press, this was my favourite. Originally this was published by Aphelion, and I got a good response from that 2005 edition. Speak, Vaccine! Speak! tells what appears at first to be a standard tale of a somewhat naive young man on a colony ship. Nothing, though, is quite what it seems.
I wrote this story as a companion piece to another story of colonization, No More than Human (which came first). Each story takes a different approach, but both reflect my view that colonising other worlds might not be as simple as it sometimes seems on the telly.
